As a job seeker, you are concerned about choosing the career that is most suitable for you. You want a career that keeps you enthusiastic and maintains your work-life balance. You definitely do not want to be one of the people that are complaining about their jobs and their day-in-day-out duties.

This blog post is a short step-by-step guide that will walk you through your journey to finding your optimum career.

In this post, we will delve into how to choose a career that matches your aptitude and skills. Towards the end, you will be introduced to a case study so that you see how this guide applies in a real-life example. So now, let's start with the central question:

What is the optimum career for you?

Of course, it is the one that makes you happy and provides a decent salary and a clear pathway to progress. It is centered on your passion, matches your skills and aptitudes, matches your personality, and maintains your work-life balance. To find your optimum career, you first need to find your passion.
Check out this article later on 6 fresh ways to find your passion. https://www.themuse.com/advice/6-fresh-ways-to-find-your-passion.

First off, believe your passion is pursuable
You need to think that your love can become a real career. Get inspired through connecting with people that have established successful careers based on their desires. Look at your friends and family members and find examples. Seek out success stories of people in your broader social circle such as your friends on Twitter, Facebook or any other social media.

Spot your interests
Ask yourself; what are the activities I love doing in my spare time? Your ideal career lies there within these activities. You might be passionate about music, literature, or even computer games. Moreover, you might have various spare time activities that you're passionate about. But will you turn them all into career?

Here is what science says
Despite having particular interests at any point in time, humans are most likely incapable of predicting what it will feel like in the future as they pursue the same interests. Meaning, things you are passionate about doing now, maybe your passion will eventually fade away. So now, the question becomes:

How to find your true passion?
The answer comes from one of the most prominent figures in the business world - Tony Robbins.

What the motivational giant points out is that according to peoples' priorities, there are two types of perspectives:

Why putting money first often isn’t a good idea in the long term
Despite being able to make financial success, people who put money first still feel unhappy and stressed. They end up disappointed with their career that they once thought they love. What happens is that these people adopt a career that is not based on their passion. Moreover, because they have the dream to achieve success, they feel enthusiastic and energetic about their career. Moreover, although they attain their financial goals, the feeling of unfulfillment persists and won’t last for long. People who prioritize life success; they know exactly what their real passion is and they build their career based on it. Consequently, they will always feel fulfilled and happy with their career.

The three aspects of passion
As Tony Robbins explains, your passion has one or more of these three aspects: talent, management, and entrepreneurship.

Talent: You're passionate about creating new products/services, solving problems, and/or you have the ability to impact people.
Management: You're good at leading a team of people to achieve business goals.
Entrepreneurship: You're passionate about taking the risk, have a vision and can establish a new business that brings it into reality.

Maybe your passion has all three aspects. Then you want to identify the aspect that fulfills you the most.

How to identify the passion that best fulfills you?

Contribution: It provides something; a product or service that people need.

Appreciation: It's something that you can continuously learn new things and improve your knowledge of. And you're able to determine your career progress by asking yourself: Where am I now? What am I going to focus on? And what am I going to do?
Expand your comfort zone. Fear is a major obstacle in your way. You hear a voice talking out of the back of your head telling you that you'd better not try something that might not work out. Don’t listen to that voice. Be courageous and go beyond the boundaries of your comfort zone. Start working diligently, your diligence will definitely pay off.

Find the context

Now that you've already spotted your passion(s), you need to find out the context that gathers them into one solid career. Details on this? The case study below will give you an example. Stay open to making a career shift Yes, this is an authentic part of your job search journey. Why? Because sometimes career change is indispensable.

You might discover new capabilities you have not previously known you have. As you pursue your career, experiences will add up and eventually enable you to delve into new areas within your career niche.  If your career is becoming obsolete. As we are entering the age of nanotechnology, such industries as wired communications and newspaper publishing are dying. If this is the case with you, you will need to start a new career search, the same is becoming true for many existing jobs. It’s important to be proactive because if you wait too long everyone in your field will be looking for work simultaneously.

Case study
As the journey to finding your optimum career is going to be the case study, I need to give you a concise introduction of myself.

Situation: - A stay-at-home mom, taking care of my kids and doing the daily household chores. Also, taking care of my mom, who was in her 6th stage of Alzheimer's when I first pondered having a career.
Skills and aptitudes: - I am an engineer, deeply passionate about foreign languages (I am a native Arabic speaker) especially English.
Passions: Reading all genres, playing the lute, knitting, and communicating with people.

What is the optimum career for me?

Prioritizing life success, being there for my family is paramount. Intuitively, I ruled out engineering as my optimum career has to be home-based. And so, I turned to my passions.

Which passion fulfills me the most?
It's the love that makes a contribution and allows appreciation.

Contribution: Bilingual services such as translation are some things that others can benefit from.
Appreciation: Constantly reading new content (books/articles/blog posts) gives me a continuously current assessment of my linguistic capabilities, and gives me insights about the next stride to take to develop my skills.
Breaking out of the comfort zone, I overcame my fears about whether or not I could achieve success. Just took the plunge and started working.
So far, finding the context was pretty easy. It is translation. So, I began working via the internet as a home-based translator, enjoying communication with my client base that has been growing slowly but continuously.

Career shift came along as I was gaining work experience. I started to have customers who ask for transcription work, SEO writing, ebook and article writing. Consequently, I managed to learn the skills needed for these jobs. Currently, I am working on my next big stride. I am studying Japanese language and culture; looking forward to pursuing my business in a trilingual approach. Moreover, this future goal keeps me ambitious and enthusiastic about my career.
